Living With Alopecia: The Perks

One of the hardest parts about living with alopecia is the consistent subtle reminders throughout the day that make you think about your hair loss or your wig. One day, I realized that I was spending way too much time thinking about my fears or concerns about my wig &  hair loss". A lot of the thoughts and fears, were about things that I couldn't change or control so I decided to make a conscious effect to spin these "fears" into something positive.  Now when I have "fears", I pause and take a moment to reflect on all the positive things that have happened to me because of my alopecia.

One of the biggest perks about wearing a wig, false lashes and temporary stick-on eyebrow tattoos and that once you master the application, it's easy. The running joke that I have with my girlfriends is that, I'm the last one in the pool and the 1st one slipping cocktails because all I literally just have to wash my body - it's kind of boring but boy is it easy! False eyelashes were tricky to learn but I have finally mastered how to get a thin black line so the strap blends in seamlessly while giving me the thin eyeliner look that I love and they give me that full natural eyelash look that we all love and best of all I never have to worry about my mascara running! How amazing is that! For my eyebrows, I use temporary stick-on eyebrow tattoos so I never have to worry about my brows not looking straight and they take less than 30sec to apply. Finally, I only have to prep my wigs once a week and they look great the rest of the time - I literally spend zero effort thinking about my hair during the week; I just put it on it go! All and all my "morning/make-up routine is about 10mins max, not too bad, right? This is what I have decided to focus on instead of the stigma about being a bald woman.

Honestly, wig life is great for mom life! For example, this past weekend, we were on holiday in Victoria Island (British Columbia, Canada). Our day was filled with lots of hiking & the kids were exhausted!  It turns out that we were there on Thanksgiving day in Canada so on a whim, we decided to celebrate by going to a nice restaurant.  We made the only reservation we could find and we had about 20mins max to get ready.  If I had to wash my hair or redo my makeup, we never would have made it to dinner and we never would have gone looking like we did. So, I throw off my Ponytail wig, got in the shower, washed the kids, touched up my makeup, and literally threw on my wig, and bam we were ready! Honestly, it was amazing! It's moments like this when I actually pull my hubby aside and say, umm, wow that was pretty amazing! Honestly, having alopecia will make your life easy if you let it. Sometimes, we just need to just stop, reflect, and celebrate it!
